The Village of Fredonia Plan Commission approved site plans for a large-scale remodel and 1,500 square-foot expansion of Port Washington State Bank’s Fredonia branch on May 6, 2024.

The building itself was erected in 1970 and was occupied by State Bank of Fredonia and then Valley Bank until 1994 when PWSB acquired the branch. After the change in ownership, the building received several modifications to bring it more in line to the aesthetic of other PWSB branches. The goal with the current remodel is to once again modernize the space and make it more conducive to today’s banking needs and the young families in the village.

The expansion will allow for a new conference room, first-floor bathrooms, larger children’s area and reception area, and additional offices and workspace for the customer service team. The aesthetic of the design inside and outside will match other PWSB branches in terms of color palette and materials used.

Outside of the building, PWSB is taking the opportunity to widen its drive-thru lanes to make entering and exiting easier for customers with larger vehicles. The exterior will also receive some modern touches and brick accents to enhance the design and curb appeal.

“The expansion is just another example of our focus on being a better Port Washington State Bank for our customers,” shared James Schowalter, president and COO. “We aim to continually improve our facilities because it allows us to give customers a better experience, whether that means getting in and out of the drive-thru easier or having a space to let the kids play while you bank. Our updates always include extra amenities for our employees, our greatest asset,” he added.

Village Administrator Christophe Jenkins shared his excitement for the combined effect that the remodel will have when paired with the reconstruction of Highland Avenue. “These two projects will brighten the beautiful corner for residents and visitors alike. We appreciate the investment in our village.”

Work is scheduled to begin in August of 2024 and conclude in summer of 2025. During construction PWSB hopes to stay open and continue to be there for customers during normal banking hours.

President Dan Gehrke commented on the relationship with the bank and the village: “Port Washington State Bank has been a staple in our community for decades. As our village grows, the banking needs of our community grows as well. This expansion proves that PWSB and the village of Fredonia will remain dedicated partners for years to come.”
